If you do not believe God is powerful enough to give mankind a supernatural Holy Bible that is His inerrant Word, you may not get much out of this article. If you know there is nothing God can't do including the creation of the world as it is literally described in the Bible, read on; we're beginning to witness some amazing events.
The ice at the poles are beginning to melt. Newsweek reported on April 3, 1995 that the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica is breaking up. Are we in the grip of global warming or is something else going on here even more significant? The Holy Bible and unbiased science help us see the truth of how the ice originally formed which is key to understanding why it is now melting.
Newsweek says that for the first time, cracks have formed in the ice shelf and ice bergs began to break off in early January, one as big as Rhode Island. Researchers have referred to Antarctica as the world's "canary-in-a-coal-mine" to show early signs that the global climate is warming. This would be evidence of the "greenhouse effect" caused by too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from burning coal, gas, and oil.
Glaciologists quoted in the Newsweek article said what has happened is certainly proof of "regional warming" and that the process is likely to accelerate because winds blowing over the continent will be warmer without the ice shelves. It is possible for the ice at the poles to melt with very little increase in worldwide temperatures as a whole. If even one tenth of Antarctica's ice melts, world sea levels would rise 12 to 30 feet.
Many small nation-states like Trinidad and Tobago fear rising sea levels will turn them into a new Atlantis. Jesus Christ said that just prior to His return there'll be "distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth". (Luke 21:25-26).
There is another phenomenon occurring at the poles that point to yet another potential global disaster, the ozone holes. Ozone is a gas in the upper atmosphere that filters out the most harmful ultraviolet light. What is causing the ozone to dissipate is not necessarily connected to why the ice is melting but what's important to see here is that this layer of atmosphere is thinning at the poles first. This helps us see how another layer of atmosphere that once existed caused the poles to freeze when it fell to earth at the great flood.
The Holy Bible tells of a time when temperatures were a lot more uniform over the earth. Before God brought a flood over the earth, there was no rain. Instead a mist came up from the ground to water everything (Genesis 2:5-6). There were not even any rainbows until God presented the first to Noah after the flood (Genesis 9:12-16). This was because there was a special layer of atmosphere the Bible calls "firmament" that was heavily laden with water: Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. (Genesis 1:7).
The earth was different under this firmament. There were great animals (dinosaurs) and people lived longer, Methuselah lived 969 years in these conditions (Genesis 5:27). Yes, there is proof that dinosaurs walked the earth with man. Fossilized dinosaur and human footprints have been found together as close as the Paluxy river Southwest of Fort Worth, Texas. The Bible also speaks of dinosaurs, see the behemoth described in Job 40:15-24, especially verse 17. What animal "moves his tail like a cedar"?
A combination of factors likely produced conditions favorable to the dinosaurs and the pre-flood longevity. The firmament filtered out more radiation than the atmosphere we have now and probably maintained a higher air pressure on the surface of the earth with all that water weight compressing the atmosphere below it. Proof that higher pressure extends life is found in the success of hyperbolic chambers used to purge the body of toxins and have also been found to accelerate healing.
God caused the flood to come when "the windows of heaven were opened" (Genesis 7:11). Water poured down on the earth from the firmament and as the firmament began to thin out, it first opened at the poles suddenly dropping the air pressure there. This caused everything at the poles to be quick-frozen. The mechanics of what happened is the same physical principal that air conditioners and refrigerators use, a compressed gas is forced to expand rapidly to induce cooling.
Polar explorers have been surprised to find tropical vegetation embedded deep in the ice and mammoths so preserved that the meat could be eaten, one was even found with a preserved buttercup flower still in its mouth. This is evidence that a catastrophic event occurred at the poles in support of the Biblical account. Contrary to what the secular world would have you believe, things were not always as we find them now.
So what is the significance of the great changes about to come on the earth that we're beginning to see? The Bible has the answer: our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ will soon return. Most will fail to come to this understanding (Matthew 7:13-14) but those who do look forward to untold blessings (1 Corinthians 2:9).
The apostle Peter spoke of today when he wrote, scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. (2 Peter 3:3-6)
Every day the news brings evidence that more of God's Word should be taken literally and the Lord's return is near. To true believers, the return of Christ is a blessed event while it strikes terror in the hearts of everyone else. His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. (Psalms 18:30) If you have not received Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, the time to do this is now: Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. (2 Corinthians 6:2).
